25 Jun Can Skin Care Products Cause Acne?

Skin care products are great tools to promote clear, healthy skin, avoid the negative effects of the sun, and prevent or eliminate acne. However, some skin care routines and products can actually cause acne instead of preventing it. From finding the right products to perfecting your routine, read on to see how to make your skin clear and radiant!

Use Non-comedogenic Products

“Comedo” is another word for pimple, so if a product is “comedogenic,” it’s likely to clog pores and cause acne and blackheads. Unfortunately, products labeled “non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores” aren’t guaranteed to prevent acne since there aren’t standards in place for labeling products as “non-comedogenic.” To make sure you’re choosing the right products, find lines that claim to be “non-comedogenic” and evaluate their thickness. As a general rule of thumb, the thicker the product is, the more likely it is to clog your pores. To make sure you’re avoiding acne-causing products, try to use water-based or light products with gel or liquid consistencies. This applies to moisturizers, makeup, sunscreen, and hair products!

Avoid Greasy Ingredients

If you’re prone to acne or have oily skin, avoid greasy ingredients like olive and avocado oil, shea and coconut butter, and fragrant products. Instead, look for fragrance-free products with ingredients like glycolic acid, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, and witch hazel.

Don’t Share Makeup or Makeup Applicators

Acne isn’t contagious, but sharing makeup, makeup brushes, and applicators can cause other people’s acne-causing bacteria, oil, and dead skin to end up in your makeup. Even if you’re using non-comedogenic products, sharing makeup could be the cause of your latest breakout.

Wash Your Face Twice a Day

If you have oily skin, you may be tempted to wash your face frequently throughout the day. But lathering up too often can irritate the skin, dry it out, and cause more acne to appear. Stick to washing your face only in the morning and at night to give your skin some
