31 Dec Chemical Peels – Myth vs. Truth

Generally, a chemical peel is used to enhance the appearance of your skin, using a chemical to exfoliate the skin before it peels off. This procedure does wonders for wrinkles and makes your skin silky smooth. However, there are several different types of chemical peels, and it can be confusing to know which chemical peel is right for you. Not to mention that chemical peels tend to receive a bad rap, so many are afraid to even try the procedure.

Take a look at these misconceptions about chemical peels so you can see fact from fiction, and decide if a chemical peel is right for you.

Myth:

It’s safe to get a chemical peel at a spa or to even do it yourself at home.

Truth:

Depending on the type of peel, it’s typically not safe to get a chemical peel at a spa or do it at home. Your risk of complications rises significantly if you don’t go to a certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist. They will be more knowledgeable about your skin type, be able to tell you the medical risks that are pertinent to your skin, will only use certifiably safe chemical peel solutions, and can apply and remove the peel effectively so there won’t be complications. The staff at a spa may not be as knowledgeable as a professional.

Myth:

You can immediately return to work after a chemical peel.

Truth:

Once again, it depends on the type of peel you get. A very deep chemical peel might result in sheets of skin falling off, so unless you want your skin peeling in front of your coworkers, you typically can’t return to work for several days after a deeper peel. However, there are laser treatments that provide the same deep chemical peel effect, without the bad side effects. You can do a series of these peel treatments instead of doing it all at once. This spaces them out and is better for your skin. You may look like you have a bad sunburn, but you should be able to go to work if you go with the option of spreading them out.

Myth:

You will see the results of your chemical peel immediately.

Truth:

As with most medical procedures, you’re going to look worse before you look better. Your face will look red, peel, and possibly have other side effects for a few days before you start to see the results. You may also need to go through several rounds of chemical peel treatment to see any sign of change.

Myth:

Chemical peels are only for older people who have wrinkles.

Truth:

Light chemical peels are appropriate for twenty year olds and older individuals. If you go in for a light chemical peel in your twenties, it can serve as an effective acne treatment. Make sure to go to a certified professional, so they can help you determine which specific skin problems you have and decide which chemical peel would be beneficial.
