When you’re younger, you can get away with a haphazard, only-sometimes skincare routine that mainly involves a dab of sunscreen and a splash of water. Once you start getting a little bit older, though, you’ll need to stay a little stricter — and perhaps add a few steps — in order to keep your youthful glow.

Incorporate a retinol product.

Retinol (also sometimes referred to as retinoids, which is actually the name for the type of chemicals of which retinol is part) is a form of vitamin A. This “magic” substance has proven antiaging properties, promoting skin cell turnover, collagen growth and elastin production. There are several grades of retinoids: some creams are available by prescription only as they feature a much stronger retinoid, while over-the-counter products are gentler, but weaker. Start off by using a gentle retinol product, and don’t be alarmed if your skin gets irritated — that’s a common side effect. After a few weeks of use, you’ll see softer, healthier skin.

Use an eye cream.

The area around the eyes is prone to signs of aging, so you’ll need to pay extra attention to your peepers. You may start seeing darker circles, wrinkles or a hollowness to the undereye area, which can be a concern. While you can certainly use concealer to cover up the dark color, you can also start using an eye cream every evening that’s formulated to combat the problem. Creams containing vitamin C (as well as vitamins A and E) can help brighten the skin, while retinol can bring back some of the volume lost due to age.

Visit the dermatologist.

If your skin is showing a few too many signs of aging, take a trip to the dermatologist — they aren’t only there to fix problems! A dermatologist can help identify potential issues or simply recommend a treatment that can brighten your skin and keep it clear. A gentle chemical peel, for example, can be a subtle way to freshen your face, while microneedling can take care of sagging skin and fine lines. Your dermatologist can also help monitor your retinol usage, and perhaps prescribe a stronger retinoid if necessary.

When altering your skincare routine, make sure to take it slow. Introduce products one at a time, waiting a few weeks before introducing another in order to give your skin time to adapt and show any improvement from the products.
